So What is AEA exactly?

Well dear readers, AEA is:

In Part 1 of my interview with Blackie Chan, he discussed the obstacles Asian men face in the adult entertainment industry and his hopes for their mainstream acceptance as sex symbols in our society. In today’s post we continue the conversation and get into the nitty gritty of being a porn star, how it impacts his perceptions of women and sex, and the pride he takes in his work.

SB: How did you feel when you shot your first porn scene?

BC: I remember not being able to sleep even one minute the night before. I couldn’t stop thinking about what I was about to do. The entire day I fought to stay awake by consuming coffee, chocolate, and energy drinks. Part of me wanted some more time to think it over. The other half of me wanted to just get it over with. I had my doctor prescribe me some Viagra, just in case I wasn’t “up” for the challenge, but I decided not to take the little blue pill. I wanted to do it naturally.

SB: So you were really nervous?

BC: I was as nervous as hell. I was afraid that my first co-star might criticize me for a poor performance. Or worse, she might tell other girls that I was a bad fuck – which would be a really bad thing.

Fortunately, it was not like that. My co-star, India Summers was very calm, understanding, and mature about it. She’s an experienced veteran porn actress. She knew it was my first time, and was willing to guide me through the whole process. If I did something right or wrong, she’d let me know. She wasn’t afraid to take the lead in certain positions that I was having trouble with. And she told me I could stop for a moment if I ever felt uncomfortable.

SB: What did you think when you watched the playback of your first scene?

BC: That I did well for a beginner. But I was disappointed in myself for not making it look enjoyable. I looked very tense and nervous throughout the scene. The expression on my face was more like a fierce stare, than a look of pleasure. Whenever I spoke, you could barely hear my voice. I had to turn the volume way up to hear what I was saying. India Summers’ voice was loud and clear, but mine was too faint to understand.

SB: Has being an adult film star changed the way you view/think about sex?

BC: One thing you learn quickly when doing porn, is to develop your oral sex skills. This is very important with any woman to make her hot, so that she will be in the right mood for the hard pounding of intercourse.

Porn sex is not the same as real life intimacy sex. When I am having porn sex, I need to tilt my body at an angle so the camera can see the act of penetration. Sometimes it’s uncomfortable and it’s hard to keep an erection in that position. But I’m getting better at it with every scene I do.

BC: I think this is more of a guy thing, but I enjoy having sex without the usual strings attached. There’s a part of me that gets a thrill from banging a woman I just met. Especially if she’s the type that I don’t usually get to meet, like a punk rocker, surfer girl, hippie artist, or from an exotic country. It’s definitely a memorable experience.

The most challenging part of being a porn star is being consistent in bed, time after time. Most people have sex depending on their mood, if you are stressed out from work, tired from a weekend hike, or you aren’t attracted to your co-star you won’t perform at your best. But perform you must, because the show must go on. The producers don’t cut you any slack. None at all. They want the scene to run like clockwork. They rent the location by the hour. If you’re a man, you are expected cum on command right down to the minute.

This was hard for me initially. My personal life and issues sometimes get the best of me. Sometimes I came too quickly. Sometimes I couldn’t shoot at all without masturbating myself.

I’m like “How can you handle all that commuting? You need to board a plane every week to get to work?” I mean, these women were literally living out of one big suitcase. But they really love the porn lifestyle, so they do it gladly.

And I found out that the men, for some odd reason tend to LOSE their passion for sex. And I’m like, “How can you not love your job? You get to fuck the daylights out of all these super hot women.” Then they all tell me the same thing. The pleasure of having sex with many beautiful women eventually wears off, and then the job becomes nothing more than a pay check. Some of them can’t have normal relationships with their partner anymore. Many of them are dating or married to porn actresses because they can’t relate to anyone else. Most of them want to quit.

Fortunately, I haven’t gotten to that point yet. And I don’t know if I ever will. I enjoy making porn too much, and watching myself on screen.

SB: By the end of your career, what do you hope your impact or legacy will be with respect to the view of Asian men in the porn industry?

BC: Before I was a male performer, I was, and still am a porn viewer. I remember when I was 12, looking at the magazines of nude women under my father’s mattress. That’s when I first discovered my sexual fantasies and masturbation. But for some reason, whenever the woman was shown having sex with a man, it was always a white man. Same thing with the porn videos, the women only had sex with white men, even if she was Asian. I think not seeing any Asian men in porn when I was younger took away my self esteem and made me feel inadequate as a kid. Back then, I was too young to understand the racial bias that exists in the entertainment industry. But even as a boy I knew that I would trade a hundred porn films featuring white men for one video with an Asian man in it. Now I can finally become that Asian man. I will never work for someone if it involves degrading or insulting my own people. As odd as it sounds, at the end of the day I work for pride.

SB: Any final thoughts you’d like to share with our readers?

BC: For me, what I do is art. It is the conflict between the male and the female, the expression of mutual desire, all the secret fantasies that we hold back on a daily basis, and all our repressed sexual lust. When you watch an adult film, all these things are exposed for you to see in a raw form. That is what I want to bring out and show to the world.

I believe that I am an artist. I write my own scenes, I put together the costumes and props, and choose the actresses and locations that will fit into my story line. It is how I express myself without worrying about censorship or any other constraints to my creativity.

Intimacy can be made into art and that’s what I’m trying to do. For me the sex is really secondary. And to tell you the truth, it isn’t always that great.

Back in April the theme was Sex Myths and Pet Peeves and during that month we tackled the myths concerning race and penis size. Never to be outdone, the lovely Elizabeth Rose penned her piece Where Are All the Asian Porn Stars?; in which she lamented the fact that she wasn’t able to find adult films that featured Asian men to add to her extensive and ever growing collection.

Well folks, none of us expected what happened next.

A trio of straight male Asian porn stars (who we would have never discovered in our many and varied Google searches for ‘Asian male porn actors’ ), namely Keni Styles, Hung Lo and Blackie Chan, answered Elizabeth’s call – proof positive that the age old adage “ask and you shall receive” actually works. And so…

After watching all the action in the comments from the sidelines, perusing some porn (what?! It was research?) and taking a brief foray into the SLAC discussion forum (I bumped into Zoe and Falco while I was there), I finally got up the nerve to ask Blackie Chan for an interview. To my delight he said yes. So, without further ado, I give you Blackie Chan, a real live and very straight Asian male adult film star…

Blackie Chan is based in Southern California, where he works part-time as an adult film star in the San Fernando Valley area (aka The Great American Porn Belt). He got his start in the adult film industry in December 2009 and since that time he has appeared in six productions. To date his work has been featured on SLAC, a site owned and operated by his friend and fellow adult film star Hung Lo.

SB: Why did you choose to become an adult film star and was it a tough decision to make?

BC: It did require a lot of thinking, but I knew it was something I wanted to at least try in my life. I’ve always been open minded. Choosing to work in the adult film industry was like an experiment to find out how far I could expand my horizons.

It all started in the internet chat forums. It was there that I first heard about a casting call for a Bukkake shoot. It was open to any man who wanted to participate. That was kind of my initiation, a test to see if I could perform on an actual adult movie set. And I did alright.

SB: You mentioned in a previous discussion that your family and close friends don’t know about your new career and that you are leading a “double life” so to speak. I imagine this must be difficult for you. Do you think porn has changed the way you relate to the people in your life?

BC: No, I keep my personal life separate from my porn life. I still treat all my friends and family the same way as I always have, with kindness and respect.

SB: Is hiding such a big part of your life hard on you?

BC: Yeah, I have to carefully balance my work schedule with my porn schedule. Sometimes I will do a scene with a girl and afterwards I have to drive to an important business meeting across town. With L.A. traffic the way it is, I find myself making up some clever excuses for being late.

Sometimes my family or friends might find one of my costumes or props lying around. And they ask a lot of questions. Then I need to make up an excuse for having blank firing pistols, a baseball uniform, fishnet stockings, Viking shield and helmet, etc. It’s not easy hiding something you worked so hard to put together.

SB: If you have a partner does she know about your new career and is she okay with it?

BC: I’m single right now. But I hope someday my future partner will understand when I explain to her about my past and why I chose this path. Maybe we’ll have a few glasses of wine or vodka before I tell her. (Laughs)

SB: How do you feel about the lack of Asian representation in the Western/mainstream adult film industry?

BC: I think it’s very insulting and degrading to all the Asian male porn consumers out there. I mean, come on, there is all kinds of porn on the market that caters to every type of fantasy. Bondage porn, S & M, Dominatrix, Fetish, Cuckolding, Food, Black male oriented porn, and even porn that involves barefoot women stomping on insects.  But there is almost ZERO straight Asian male porn.

I don’t want to sound PC about it, because the last thing the adult film industry gives a damn about is being politically correct. I’m just saying, that as an Asian-American viewer of porn, I should have more choices than I have right now. Right now my two choices are: 1) Give up and just watch mainstream porn that generally features white males, while trying to pretend that the guy is Asian (which doesn’t work) or 2) shop online for Asian porn that is produced overseas (i.e. Japanese porn). The latter choice means that my dollars will go overseas, instead of being spent here in the U.S.  So, in addition to Asian men being frustrated by the total lack of adult films featuring men who look like them, American dollars and jobs are being lost. It just doesn’t make sense on any level.

SB: Did your feelings on this issue make you more determined to pursue porn as a career or give you pause?

BC: It did not discourage me. I use it to motivate myself to pursue my career in porn with more passion. When people tell me that I can’t do it, or that I’m not good enough, it only drives me to go after it harder. I think it takes someone with that kind of determination to change things.

SB: What obstacles did/do you have to overcome in the industry as an Asian male adult film star?

BC: In North America and much of the Western world there’s a perception that Asian males are not sexual or not masculine. I knew coming into the industry that it would be an uphill battle to convince people that I can do the job.

When I meet with producers, they are surprised to see that I don’t fit their image of a stereotypical geeky Asian guy. I speak perfect English, I don’t wear glasses, I’m 5’10” and I weigh 175 lbs. I take good care of my body by working out at the gym regularly, so I can at least look like a performer.

The porn industry is a business, just like any other. They want to make a profit. So if nobody wants to an Asian man in porn, it won’t happen. Lately there are more Asian men being featured in small scenes here and there… (Pauses) so maybe the market is evolving.

SB: Do you think women in American porn respond to you differently than they do to white, black or latino male porn stars? If so, what do you think accounts for this?

BC: It’s not like dating. The women in porn are very professional. Your leading lady is an actress. It’s her job to perform with you. Even if she isn’t attracted to you, she will act as though you are the best cock she’s ever had. After all, she’s getting paid a lot of money for each scene, and she knows what she needs to do in order to earn it.

If she doesn’t want to have sex with you, she will tell her agent, and her agent will tell you NO. All dealings are done through agents. There have been several porn starlets who declined to do a scene with me, after I emailed their agents my picture. Was it due to the fact that I am Asian? Would she have refused if I was a white, black, latino male porn star? Maybe or maybe not. I will never know the answer for sure. But there are hundreds of beautiful, sexy women to choose from. I don’t get hung up on being rejected. You just hire another girl who will be happy to give an Asian man a try.

SB: Do you consider yourself a pioneer in the porn industry?

BC: Not really, I’m just an everyday man. I don’t do this for a living, and it doesn’t pay that much anyway. The most I’ve ever earned for a shoot was $75. I have a normal day job to pay the bills. Porn is like my side job, it’s more like volunteer work, and it’s something I enjoy doing that I feel has a purpose. A real pioneer would be the guy who can turn AM porn into something big and mainstream. Right now it’s not there yet.

SB: Do you know approximately how many Asian male porn stars there are in the western porn industry?

BC: Not sure. I can probably count all of us on one hand. There’s Rick Lee (retired), Tom Dong, who by the way was murdered last month as his studio – may he rest in peace, Mr. “British Invasion” a.k.a. Keni Styles, Hung Lo, and myself. That’s pretty much all that I know of. Yeah, only four of us now that Tom is gone.

SB: How do you think your presence in the porn industry, as well as that of other Asian male porn stars, will impact the way Asian men are seen in western culture if at all?

BC: I believe positive portrayals of Asian males can change the way we are viewed as men and as sexual beings. Many ideas that originate in porn have a discreet way of seeping into mainstream society.

For instance, take the widespread fetish for women with large breasts. There was a famous porn producer in the 1960’s named Russ Meyer, who had an extreme fixation for big boobs. His DD cup women were prominently featured in all of his movies, which were shown worldwide. Eventually Hollywood adopted this image as a backlash to the bra-burning feminist. And today breast augmentation surgery is common and widely accepted.

Another good example is Black male/ White female porn. Thirty years ago, it was off limits to show a black man engaging in sexual acts with a white woman. These days you can walk into any adult video store and they have an entire section devoted to that type of porn. Recently there was an episode of “Sex and the City” where Miranda becomes obsessed with BM/WF interracial porn. Showing that on SATC is about as mainstream as it gets. I hope someday they’ll be showing Asian men in the same way, as men who are sexually appealing to any woman. Maybe they will show it on “Gossip Girl” or “Desperate Housewives”, and it will be so common place that no one will guess it all started in porn.
