Confidence only goes so far before the woman's opinion starts to matter--many of us think highly of ourselves, but we do like assurance that you think highly of us, too. That said, I don't think it's something you can beat yourself up over. It was a simple poor choice of words in an unrehearsed moment. My attention is actually more drawn to the fact that you feel so bad about it. I think it's a classy reaction to what happened. A girl would have projected and called the guy a wuss for taking it so hard. But you're not a girl, you're a woman, and you know that when it comes to one-on-one these things matter.
